It Is Simpler To Cure Sick Soils Than Sick People, Which Shall We Choose?

The title of this blog is a quote by Dr. Charles Northen, 1936 who built health from the ground up.

Do you know that most of us today are suffering from certain dangerous diet deficiencies which cannot be remedied until the depleted soils from which our foods come are brought into proper mineral balance?

”The alarming fact is that foods – fruits and vegetables and grains – now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain needed minerals, are starving us – no matter how much of them we eat!”

No longer does a balanced and fully nourishing diet consist merely of so many calories or certain vitamins or a fixed proportion of starches, proteins, and carbohydrates. We now know that it must contain, in addition, something like a score of mineral salts.

Following a wide experience in general practice, Dr. Northen specialized in stomach diseases and nutritional disorders. It was he who first voiced the surprising assertion that we must make soil building the basis of food building in order to accomplish human building. ”Bear in mind,” says Dr. Northen, “that minerals are vital to human metabolism and health – and that no plant or animal can appropriate to itself any mineral which is not present in the soil upon which it feeds.

Cow dung compost is added into the soil to improve nutrients and water-holding capacity (Arslan et al. 2008; Vakili et al. 2015) Thus, cow dung may not only act as a substitute for chemical fertilizers because it supplements organic matter, but also as a conditioner for soil (Garg and Kaushik 2005; Yadav et al. 2013; Be´langer et al. 2014). Cow dung not only improves the different properties of soil but also acts as a source of microorganisms, which has a direct impact on our gut. For example, Mozafar demonstrated that adding an organic fertilizer such as cow manure significantly increased the Vitamin B12 content of spinach leaves, i.e., approximately 0.14 μg/100 g fresh weight.

We understand that the use of cow dung should be promoted in the field of agriculture to improve our health but since the desi cow population is on a decline and we must protect and conserve them.
